Question: What type of cargo can I transport with Atlantic Shipping Company?

Answer: We transport various types of cargo in compliance with US and Cape Verde laws, and international maritime regulations. The cargo we transport is very varied…automobiles, trucks, pleasure boats, motorcycles, engines, appliances, construction materials, and clothing are just a few examples.

Q: Are there any items that cannot be transported to Cape Verde?

A: Transporting explosives, guns, ammunition, drugs, and any other material considered illegal under US and Cape Verdean law is forbidden.

Q: Is it possible to purchase insurance against risks such as damage and loss of property?

A:  We recommend that our customers have insurance for the loads they are carrying with Atlantic Shipping. When we receive a cargo, we provide a receipt with this information.

Q: How much does insurance cost?

A: It depends on the item's value and shipping cost. An approximate calculation is around 2.5 percent of the total value of the goods and freight.

Q: What is the insurance coverage amount?

A: It also depends on the items that are being delivered. It typically covers the total declared value less a deductible that varies per shipment.

Q: What are the drawbacks of not having insurance?

A: If the cargo is insured, and the value of the product is high, the customer receives nearly the entire guaranteed amount in the event of damage or loss. If the client does not acquire insurance, the customer will only receive a modest amount from the carrier, Atlantic Shipping Co. Inc., in the event of damage or loss. This reimbursement is not based on the worth of the products, but rather on a fixed amount based on the freight cost.

Q: In Cape Verde, what does the term "Papers' Exchange" mean?

A: Every shipping company in the world issues a document called a Bill of Lading, or B/L, to the customer. This is the document that shows who owns the goods that have been carried. When the customer arrives at the destination, he or she must go to the transport company's agent to get the B/L validated. This would be impossible to achieve without it. It would be impossible to validate the cargo without the Bill of Lading document.

Q: Can I secure my container or drum with a padlock?

A: We advise the consumer to deliver the goods to us in the safest manner possible. For  containers, we will apply a seal on the cargo once the customer has placed all their items inside and closed the container (drum or other). This ensures the container's integrity until it reaches its destination.

Q: Can I hire an agent to transport my belongings to the Atlantic Shipping warehouses?

A: Yes, you certainly can.

Q: How can I find an agent with reliable transportation?

A: Cargoes are delivered to our warehouses by Cape Verdeans from a variety of states, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Florida, among others. Those that are interested should contact our office, and we will provide their contact information.

Q: What is the function of an official dispatcher?

A: They are experts with the knowledge and license to represent consumers in the cargo lifting process with customs.

Q: Can I pick up a load without using an official dispatcher's services?

A: Yes, of course. Goods for personal use can be lifted by the owner without the assistance of a customs dispatching agent if they meet specific conditions imposed by customs. In Cape Verde, this form of order is referred to as "passbook dispatch."

Q: If all of my possessions/products are new, do I need to disclose them?

A: Not for the purpose of transportation, but you do for cargo insurance.
